Strengthen Your Back

 Hi ,

One of the things I have been telling my patients for the last 30 years is that the human body was never designed to sit.  We were designed to squat, but not to sit.  Sitting weakens the back muscles and creates an imbalance between the muscles of the front of the body and the back of the body.  This imbalance can cause pain to appear almost anywhere in the body, but especially in the low back, mid back, and neck areas.

Over the years I have tried to address this problem with various muscle balance exercises such as those done on a therapy ball.  Most recently I have brought a Tai Chi instructor into the office to teach classes to improve balance through Tai Chi.  But 2 weeks ago one of my patients, Chuck, brought me a book to look at about how to correct this specific muscle imbalance.  This was very important for Chuck because he is a CPA and it is tax season right now.  So you can imagine the stress on his back right now.

I read through the book and I can say that I am excited about the program this book offers.  It directly addresses the very concerns I have had for years in a very simple manner.  No special equipment is needed, and anybody that has the ability to stand up can do it.  Most importantly, they have a proven track record that this program works.

This is not magic, but it is likely the best thing I have seen for dealing with chronic back pain of most any sort.  Although it is simple - to begin is simply 5 basic postures you hold for 15 seconds at different positions, it is not without effort.  Most of us have really weak back muscles.  You will want to move into these exercises slowly and easily, as they will work those back muscles in a way they are probably not used to.

The best place to start is their book.  It is written in a way real people can understand, and the pictures are excellent at helping you to understand your back.  Here is a link to Amazon where it is considerably cheaper than it is on the Foundation Training website.  Link   But their website is also great to visit, as they have a number of videos you can watch to better visualize the proper positions for the exercises.  Here is a link to their video page.

I would like to see every one of my patients doing these exercises.  They look like essential training for everyone that has a back.  The book will show you how your back works and what happens when things go wrong in simple layman's language.  The exercises are clearly demonstrated and described.  As I say, I highly recommend each of you get a copy of this book and read it cover to cover.  Here is that link to Amazon once again.

Take care,
David

Exercise and caffeine have beneficial effects on DNA

Exercise alters the expression of our genes in our muscles.  This is how it stimulates the genes to manufacture more muscle in response to exercise.  Interestingly, caffeine has the same effect when used in the right amounts and at the right times.  The effect is greatest when combined with exercising, especially exercising on an empty stomach.  So a cup of organic coffee or tea on an empty stomach just before you workout can help you build muscle faster.  You can boost this impact even more by drinking a rapidly assimilated protein like whey concentrate (20 grams) immediately after the exercise (within 30 minutes).

White rice linked to Diabetes

There seems to be this general myth that the way people eat in China and Japan is somehow healthier than how we eat here in the US.  Rice has been carried along with this myth as a somehow healthy food.  Rice, especially white rice is almost entirely carbohydrate.  Within a few minutes of digestion, that means it is almost pure sugar.  Carbohydrate equals sugar, so rice equals sugar!  This huge study primarily in China and Japan shows not surprisingly that the more rice you eat, the more likely you will come down with type 2 diabetes.

Pudding vending machine tells kids to scram

I thought this technology was amazing.  Jello Temptations wants to target its product specifically to adults, so it developed a pudding sample vending machine that actually looks at the faces of the folks asking for a sample, and decides if a kid is doing the asking.  If it is a kid, it tells the kid to step aside because these samples are for adults only.
